Improved Impact Resistance: Elastomer-Modified PP (Impact Copolymers & TPOs)


1.Advantages

Blending PP with elastomers like EPDM or ethylene-based copolymers creates materials with significantly enhanced toughness, especially at low temperatures. 

This modification dramatically improves impact strength and resistance to cracking or fracture under sudden loads or impacts, addressing a key weakness of standard PP. 

While stiffness and heat deflection temperature may decrease slightly compared to homopolymer PP, the resulting material offers much better ductility and energy absorption. Processability generally remains good.


2.Applications 

This modification is crucial for automotive bumper fascias, interior trim components (dashboards, door panels), and exterior cladding where impact resistance is paramount.

It's extensively used in consumer goods like storage containers (particularly those requiring drop resistance), luggage, toys, and sports equipment. Industrial applications 

include protective covers, guards, and non-fragile housings. Thermoformed TPO sheets are also common for large panels.
