Increased Stiffness, Dimensional Stability & Cost-Effectiveness: Mineral-Filled PP
Advantages
Adding mineral fillers like talc (20-40%) or calcium carbonate primarily increases the stiffness (flexural modulus) and heat deflection temperature (HDT) of PP,
allowing it to perform better at elevated temperatures. Fillers significantly reduce shrinkage and warpage during molding, leading to superior dimensional stability
and tighter tolerances in finished parts. They also improve surface hardness and scratch resistance.
Crucially, mineral fillers are relatively inexpensive, offering a highly cost-effective way to enhance properties
while reducing raw material cost per volume compared to unfilled PP.
Applications
Widely used in automotive under-the-hood components requiring heat resistance (heater housings, radiator end caps), interior trim parts (door handles, panels),
and exterior parts like mirror housings. Appliance applications include washing machine agitators, tubs, and dishwasher components.
Consumer goods encompass housewares, furniture parts, and power tool housings where rigidity and cost are key.
Also common in thick-walled parts where shrinkage control is critical.
